About the Belogradchik Rocks

The Belogradchik Rocks are a formation of unusual shaped rocks that spread over an area of 50 km2. They are found in the western part of the Balkans. There are five main groups of rocks in total, but the central group is also the most famous, the one closest to the town of Belogradchik.

The rocks have unusual shapes, and some of them resemble people or objects. For that reason, many myths are associated with them. To be fair, it is an eerie landscape, so it’s easy to associate the rock formations with legends and fairy-tales.

The formation of the rocks started over 230 million years ago. So this natural wonder is a result of hundreds of years of erosion and other natural processes that shaped the rocks into what we can see today.

The Belogradchik Fortress

Around the central rock formation, near Belogradchick, you can also find the Belogradchik Fortress, or Kaleto.

The Fortress was build during the time the region was part of the Roman Empire. Initially it served just as an observation point, but during the 14th century it was fortified further by Ivan Stratsimir, the tsar of Vidin. Kaleto became one of the main strongholds in the region, second after Baba Vida, the tsars main fortress in Vidin.
